About This Garment

The Oriental Empress gown showcases the challenges and opportunities of digitising fashion and textile heritage. Unlike rigid objects, fabric garments require specialised handling and capture techniques to accurately represent their form, drape, and surface qualities.

Capture Method

We have developed special methods for working with non-rigid fashion gowns:

  • Basic photogrammetry approach - Standard photogrammetry workflow adapted for textile capture
  • Simple meeting room setup - Used as a light well, demonstrating the portability of the technique
  • Refined methodology - The approach has been developed and honed to be quick and easy to execute
  • Location versatility - Can be deployed in a variety of suitable locations without complex studio setups
  • Non-rigid object handling - Specialised techniques to capture fabric drape and textile details accurately

This streamlined approach allows for efficient digitisation of fashion collections in museum settings without requiring extensive studio infrastructure or complex lighting setups.

Fashion Documentation

Digital 3D models of fashion garments provide:

  • Permanent records of textile heritage before deterioration
  • Virtual exhibition capabilities without handling fragile garments
  • Detailed study of construction techniques and materials
  • Educational resources for fashion history and design
  • Conservation documentation and condition monitoring

Interactive 3D Model

Use the controls to:

  • Rotate the gown to examine all angles and details
  • Zoom in to study fabric textures and embellishments
  • Appreciate the drape and form of the garment
  • View construction details not visible in traditional photography
