Box of rocks
Interactive teaching collection of geological specimens digitised with photogrammetry and assembled using Pedestal3D's custom ensemble feature.
This collection of geological specimens demonstrates an innovative approach to creating interactive teaching sets, where multiple individually scanned objects are combined into a single manipulable ensemble for educational purposes.

About This Collection
This box of rocks represents a typical teaching collection used in geology and earth science education. By digitising each specimen individually and then combining them into an interactive ensemble, students and researchers can examine the collection remotely with unprecedented access and detail.
Capture Method
These rocks were scanned with a basic photogrammetry approach and then combined into an innovative teaching set:
- Individual rock scanning - Each rock specimen was captured separately using basic photogrammetry
- Ensemble assembly - The rocks were combined in a “teaching set” using the custom ensemble feature of Pedestal3D
- Independent manipulation - Each item can be manipulated separately within the ensemble view
- Linked detailed views - Individual rocks can be loaded into their own view for more detailed analysis
- Information panel integration - Links to individual specimens are available through the information panel
This approach allows educators to present collections as they would appear physically whilst enabling students to examine individual specimens in detail.
Educational Benefits
Digital teaching collections provide:
- Remote access to geological specimens for distance learning
- Detailed examination without handling fragile or valuable samples
- Comparative study by viewing multiple specimens simultaneously
- Individual specimen analysis through linked detailed views
- Preservation of teaching collections in their original arrangement
Pedestal3D Ensemble Feature
The custom ensemble feature allows:
- Multiple 3D objects displayed together in a single view
- Individual manipulation of each object within the ensemble
- Links to standalone detailed views of each specimen
- Contextual presentation whilst maintaining detailed access
- Ideal for teaching collections, archaeological assemblages, and comparative studies
Interactive 3D Model
Use the controls to:
- Manipulate each rock individually within the collection
- Click information panel links to view detailed individual specimens
- Compare multiple rocks side by side
- Examine surface textures and geological features in detail
